Our impact

Building a community-based food system

Our impact isn't one program or one number.

Caja Solidaria serves as connective tissue across our local food system. We connect farms, food businesses, shared infrastructure, health care, community organizations, investment, and neighbors so that resources can move through the community rather than around it.

We also build, operate, and test pieces of that system ourselves. That allows us to learn what works, demonstrate new models, and help build the partnerships and financing needed to sustain them.

What that looks like in practice

Sharing infrastructure

A commercial kitchen, a farm, and a tool library are expensive for any one neighbor or small business to build alone. By owning and operating these pieces together, we lower the barrier for farmers, food entrepreneurs, and neighbors to start, grow, and feed one another.

Building durable funding for Food is Medicine

Food is Medicine began as a pilot we ran with health care partners. Today it is moving toward reimbursement-based, payer-supported models — turning a grant-funded program into infrastructure that can last, and proving a model other communities can follow.

Keeping local resources circulating locally

Our harvest moves to neighbors through Food is Medicine, the Free Fridge, and community partners — and into the local economy through businesses like Pisgah Bakehouse and Mountain Foods. Every plate and every purchase keeps value close to home.
